Study Area, General Theme and Topics

The study area in this second edition of the IP in Athens remained the metropolitan area of Athens. The title of the IP was again ‘Strategic spatial planning: impact of mega events on metropolitan economies and societies. The Olympic games in Athens’, but a year after the event. The focus, thus was on the concrete impact of the decisions, programmes and projects implemented in Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games on the governance, economy and society of the metropolitan agglomeration. Four topics were selected: a) The Olympic Village; b) The Olympic Stadium complex at Maroussi; c) The coastal area of Faliro; d) Metropolitan governance.
