Study Area, General Theme and Topics

The study area was the metropolitan area of Athens. The general theme and title of the IP was ‘Strategic spatial planning: impact of mega events on metropolitan economies and societies. The Olympic games in Athens’. The focus was on the expected impact of the decisions, programmes and projects taking place in the context of the Athens redevelopment for the 2004 Olympic Games on the governance, economy and society of the metropolitan agglomeration. Four topics were selected: a) Socio-economic impacts of the Olympic Village; b) Urban planning and the Olympic Stadium complex at Maroussi; c) Environment and planning, tourism and recreation in the coastal area of Faliro; d) Planning and governance: collective vs private interest.
